Petitioning for Freedom has earned the 2024 Digital Humanities Award for Best New Dataset or DH Model.

The first-of-its-kind project invites users to explore how marginalized communities navigated the courts to seek justice. Katrina Jagodinsky, Susan Rosowski Associate Professor of history, is principal investigator. The result of more than a decade of research, Jagodinsky was assisted by 52 undergraduate and graduate student researchers, additional faculty, and the team at the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities.

These awards are designed to raise awareness, put interesting DH resources in the spotlight, and engage DH users (and general public) in the work. The public nominates and votes for this recognition of talent and expertise in the digital humanities (DH) community. An international nominations committee of volunteers oversees the nominations process and decides on final candidates for each category based on whether they meet four criteria.

The selection was based on 1522 votes, and the recognition is highly valued within the DH community.
