Dawne Curry Awarded Layman Grant-In-Aid Award

03.22.2010 @ 12:37 PM

Congratulations to Dawne Curry, who has just received a Layman Grant-In-Aid from UNL's Research Council for her research project, "We Want the Right to Mourn:  Alexandra, South Africa and Death Rituals During Apartheid, 1970-1978." As a recipient of the Layman Grant-in-Aid award, Dr. Curry will conduct research in South Africa with current and former residents of Alexandra, a Black and Coloured township located nine miles northeast of Johannesburg. Her research will explore ways in which Alexandrans mourned when apartheid officials prohibited or regulated funerary practices.  In addition, she will examine different forms of death, such as necklacing (a practice whereby people place a tire around a person's neck and ignite it) and state sponsored violence.
