My research focuses on the political economy of the American West, in particular Native American communities. I have completed or am currently involved in research projects that compare Indian and non-Indian economic and political developments on the Great Plains, including examinations of the agricultural, manufacturing, mining and service industries.
I also am a part-time faculty member of the History and Political Science Departments at the University of Nebraska - Omaha, where I have designed and taught courses in American government and world history.
Previous to my return to academia, I held senior policy positions in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and was a presidential appointee to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
